The Sound Way improves an average primary school class's overall reading and writing standards by an average of 2 to 3 academic years in eight to ten weeks. High school students record even greater improvements, with some older students having experienced improvements of up to 8 years (that’s eight school year grades) in reading ability and up to 6 years in spelling ability.

The Sound Way program's unique design allows for whole-class participation whilst remarkably providing accelerated learning for every individual student in the room. When this powerful teaching program is placed into the hands of teachers it becomes the catalyst for classwide and schoolwide literacy transformation. It has the effect of placing two teachers into every classroom who are then able to work collaboratively to achieve spectacular results in just one term!! 

There are Sound Way programs to suit every age group in primary and secondary schools. Both the Junior and Senior Sound Way programs are designed to be used with the whole class participating and working as one large group; i.e. - mainstream, advanced and remedial all in together. There is absolutely no need for grouping or streaming most classes. The program's unique design allows it to meet the individual needs of all students at the same time. 

The Sound Way has been created in accordance with the latest worldwide research into literacy teaching. Each lesson is designed to sequentially develop, teach, give practice in and assist the students to learn and master the body of knowledge necessary for them to develop clear speech, neat writing, accurate spelling and expressive reading. Good comprehension skills naturally follow the mastery of these basic disciplines.

The Sound Way is based upon a long proven method of phonetic teaching that first loads and programs the brain with the 45 sounds (phonemes) that comprise English words and the 75 ways these sounds are represented in their written form on paper (phonograms). By then integrating this knowledge with the rules of English spelling, The Sound Way is able to teach the spelling, writing and reading of words from their sounds - that is, phonetically! This highly structured method of direct instruction phonetic teaching results in the opening, expansion and development of some of the neural pathways within the brain. "The lights come on," as they say, and students find themselves with a new found independence and ability to successfully reason through and resolve problems for themselves.

 Beginning with Lesson One and progressing through the 36x 40-minute face-to-face DVD lessons with the senior programme; and 53x 30-minute face-to-face DVD lessons with the junior programme; The Sound Way teaches and provides students of every age with a progressive clear and tangible understanding of the structure and mechanics (workings) of the English language. Students actually learn the "how and why" behind the construction of most English words. An ability which, once attained, can be applied instantly and automatically to write or read almost any word in the English language. Each DVD lesson is backed-up by a 30-minute workshop book lesson which provide consolidaion for their new understandings of how we read and write, extends their vocabulary, and a comprehension passage which also provides practice material for their oral reading. The entire lesson is concluded with a powerful 10-minute Daily Sentence Construction Exercise  (clear instructions for which are provided in the Teacher/Facilitator Manual).
